Saving vs Investing vs Trading: Three Different Games
Saving, investing and trading all start with the same rupee. So why do they end so differently?
Saving keeps money safe, investing grows it slowly by owning things, and trading tries to profit from short price moves.
The story
A cricket match is on at a friend's place. Arjun is scrolling a trading app between overs.
Arjun: Meera, saving, investing, trading. Aren't they the same thing? Money goes in, money grows.
Meera: Let's use cricket. Saving is guarding your wicket. Safe, but slow runs.
Arjun: And investing?
Meera: Investing is batting through a long innings. Some bad overs, but over years the score builds. You own parts of real businesses and give them time.
Arjun: Then trading is hitting sixes every ball!
Meera: Trying to. Trading is buying and selling over days or minutes to catch price moves. Every big swing can get you out.
Arjun: But the sixes are where the money is, no?
Meera: SEBI checked. In FY23, 71% of individual intraday traders lost money.
Arjun: Seventy-one… okay. So which game should I play?
Meera: Depends on what each pays, and what each costs. Start with saving in the lab.
What you just saw
Same money, three different jobs. Saving keeps it safe for a near need.
Investing owns something for years. Trading bets on a short price move.
Pick the job first. Then pick the place for the money.
Saving is for safety, investing is for growth over years, trading is a skill game with high risk.
This lesson has its own hands-on lab: Save, invest or trade?.
