Risk and Return: Why They Always Travel Together
Why does nobody offer you a safe deal that pays 30% a year?
To aim for higher returns, you must accept more ups and downs and a bigger chance of loss.
The story
Arjun's cousin Rohan shares a WhatsApp forward: “Earn 5% a month, fully safe!”
Arjun: Meera, see this. 5% a month, no risk. Why would anyone keep an FD?
Meera: Let me ask you. A bus ticket to Mysuru or a flight. Which is faster?
Arjun: Flight, obviously.
Meera: And which one costs more?
Arjun: Flight. You pay more to get there faster.
Meera: Money works the same way. Higher growth comes with a price. The price is risk: your result can swing, and sometimes go down.
Arjun: So return and risk come together? Like a combo meal?
Meera: Always. If someone shows you high return with zero risk, check twice. Something is hidden.
Arjun: Then how much risk is okay for me?
Meera: First see how much difference return makes over 15 years. It will surprise you.
What you just saw
More bumpiness raised the aim, and the number of losing years too.
With no bumps there was never a bad year, but the growth was small.
That's the deal: a higher aim comes with bad years. Nobody can promise you one without the other.
Higher return and higher risk travel together. “High return, zero risk” is a red flag.
This lesson has its own hands-on lab: Risk and return.
