Time Horizon: Why Your Goal Decides Your Investment

Same money, same person. Why can the right choice for 2 years be the wrong choice for 20?

The idea in one line

Your time horizon is how long until you need the money, and it decides how much ups and downs you can handle.

The story

Arjun has two plans on a sticky note: “Goa trip next December” and “Flat down-payment one day”.

Arjun: Meera, I'll put both goals into shares. Shares grow fastest, right?

Meera: Over long periods, often. But what if shares fall 20% next November?

Arjun: Then… my Goa money shrinks just before the trip.

Meera: And the flat money?

Arjun: That's years away. It has time to come back.

Meera: That's time horizon: how long until you need the money. Short horizon, keep it safe. Long horizon, you can take bumps.

Arjun: So the goal picks the investment, not my excitement.

Meera: Well said. And time does something magical to growth. Let's see how long ₹1 lakh takes to become ₹5 lakh.

Arjun: Five times? That'll take forever.

Meera: Not forever. Fewer years than you think.

What you just saw

With 1 year to wait, many made-up paths ended below the start.

With more years, the bumps had time to even out, so fewer paths ended below it.

So near money goes somewhere safe, and only far money can take bumps.

Remember this

First ask “When do I need it?” Then choose where to put it.

This lesson has its own hands-on lab: Time horizon.
